HYPOTHESIS ON FOUNDATION OF MILAN
There’s a definite moment, into the unceasing run over of the seasons, when the “Other World” and ours get together. Time is suspended, it’s the time in the “not time”, when everything can happens. It’s Samain: the begin and the end of Celtic year.
TRINVXTION SAMONI SINDVOS was the most popular feast for Celts and it took place in the same moment of Antares rising, in the days between the old and the new year.
The festivals, celebrated in the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth day of Samonios (October), as fixed in the Coligny’s calendar, represent a favourable period, ideal to start any activity. Probably, on this dates, Belloveso founded the Gallic core of the city, known as “Medhelanon”.

“De transitu in Italiam Gallorum haec accepimus. Dum Priscus Tarquinius Romae regnabat, Celtarum penes Bituriges summa imperii fuit. Ambigatus eorum rex fuit, virtute fortunaque cum sua, tum publica praepollens, quod in imperio eius Gallia frugum hominumque fertilis fuit itaque regnum incolarum multitudine praegravabatur. Rex igitur, quod exonerare gravi turba regnum cupiebat, Bellovesum ac Segovesum sororis filios, impigros iuvenes, missurum se esse in novas sedes ostendit. Tum Segoueso sortibus dati Hercynei saltus; Belloveso in Italiam viam di dabant. Is Bituriges, Arvernos, Senones, Haeduos, Ambarros, Carnutes, Aulercos excivit. Ingentibus peditum equitumque copiis in Tricastinos venit. Alpes inde oppositae erant. [...] Cum illi per Taurinos saltusque Alpes transcendissent, acie Tuscos haud procul Ticino flumine fuderunt. Locum ubi consederant agrum Insubrium appellari audierant, cognominem Insubribus pago Haeduorum, ibi condidere urbem, Mediolanium appellaverunt.”
Livio places the foundation of the city in the sixth century BC, because the kingdom of Tarquinius Priscus expanded from 616 BC to 579 BC, while the foundation of Marseille occurred about in 600 BC.
The foundation of a new city corresponded, as it was for use at the Celts, the definition of a sacred center, the “omphalos” from Greek, followed by offers to gods and the choice of name which was to be a good omen. Milano was Mediolanum, that mean “the middle ground” or “centre of perfection”.
